Planet Elystar - Mining Colony Units

Planet Elystar was a discarded concept during my internship, that me and 2 other artists worked on. I was tasked to create the mechanical machinery for the colonists. I created these concepts from scratch taking inspiration from various artists and the Diesel-Punk world of Dust 1947.
The models were created in Blender and textured using Substance Painter. They are optimized game assets with low poly geometry, as they are intended for a Real Time Strategy game with moderate view distance from the camera

Please see my other work in my game Environments if you are interested about the planet's characteristics and background information which was created by fellow artist Marius Kröger (link).

I was tasked to create 3 types of units that will be inevitably required as a key part of a mining colony. A Mining unit, a Transport Unit and a flying Cargo Unit

Moodboard and the initial blockout for the Mining Unit. I imagined a quadrupedal machine with strong legs, that can use pneumatic pressure to move and force its way through large rocks to drill them into smaller pieces using the giant drill on its nose

I created the mesh in Blender and textured it with Substance Painter. Naturally in this condition it resembled a brand new unit that just rolled off the construction line

Due to the harsh nature of the planet these units required to have various stages of damage and dereliction, which were all made using unique models and unique textures

This kind of degradation is specific to the planet's vicious atmosphere

Moodboard and the initial blockout for the Transport Unit. Using my previous inspirations I imagined several versions of a half tracked heavy duty transport vehicle, in the end I went with the most plausible one

The Cargo Unit is an automated flying machine, with no crew onboard. Its purpose is to haul storage containers for long distance travel, which is key to collecting resources valuable to the survival of the colony
